Day 14 of 30 — Public Thoughts
Welcome to the first issue of the Modern Marketing Journal.
Five ideas every Saturday to help you find What’s Next…
⏰ Read time: just 5 minutes
1. James Clear — 4 types of wealth
There are 4 types of wealth:
— James Clear (@JamesClear) July 12, 2018
1. Financial wealth (money)
2. Social wealth (status)
3. Time wealth (freedom)
4. Physical wealth (health)
Be wary of jobs that lure you in with 1 and 2, but rob you of 3 and 4.
There's something powerful in thinking about these all in the same terms (wealth)... rather than four separate aspects of life.
2. Pierce Brown — character writing process
- “What's you're outlining, planning process like?”
“I’d say I’m best with like a four to five page outline and I know the broad strokes of where I want to take my characters and why.
But what really helps me is finding out what every character wants at the beginning and then what they do to achieve it.
And I'm talking in very broad strokes, like on a single note card... What they want, what they'll have to do to achieve it, or what's stopping them from achieving it, and then do they get it at the end.
And if they do get it how is it different than what they expected and so that creates a lot of it creates for me the the character's arc by knowing what they want and I don't have to know the ups and downs of the plot."
Too often in writing, I focus too much on the plot. The "What" that's happening.
Pierce does the inverse.
Not sure I could be a full pantser...
But how can I focus less on the "What" and more on the "Why"?
3. Austin Kleon — writing
I am deep into writing at the moment and I keep repeating to myself: “It doesn’t matter if it’s good right now. It just needs to exist.”
Cheers to the shitty first draft 🍻
4. Alex Cooper — crazy idea meeting once a month
One of the best things we did to keep our creative team inspired was to put in one call a month for a crazy ideas brainstorm.

Strip everything back and ask the team if budget or production were no limits, what are some of the craziest ideas we can think of (hooks, visuals,…
How can we think differently?
5. Alex Hormozi — stop trying
Stop trying to win… and just win.
Reminds me of Yoda… “do or do not… there is no try.”
