don't break the chain (what i learned the last 518 days).

Day 29 of 30 — Public Thoughts

518 days ago I committed to my Power List

Not “committed” like how I “committed” to not swearing...

That didn’t fxcking last.

But REAALLY committed.

2022 was a good year, not great.

With some high highs where I generated momentum, hit some gym PRs, and settled into life in SoCal…

But some lows where I had things, like a car accident and Covid and let those throw me off track.

So that was my goal for 2023…

Commitment… especially during the ups and downs.

There’s a story from Jerry Seinfeld…

When he was up and coming as a comic he made a commitment to himself...

Every day he was going to write. No matter what.

Then on a big calendar he pinned to his wall, put a big red X on that day…

So, after a few days it became a game of —

“Don’t break the chain…”

— Jerry Seinfeld

So I adopted that mindset…

518 days later it’s changed my life. (Minus about 15 days of being sick, traveling, work, etc.)

Here’s a 7 benefits from the “don’t break the chain!” mindset and what I’ve learned to keep momentum going…

  1. Skills compounded fast.
  2. Tracking it daily to make life feel more like a game.
  3. Feel more emotionally consistent.
  4. Know the days between 7 and 21 will be the hardest.
  5. Every once in a while a challenge day comes up (a.k.a. a day where everything sucks and seems like life is against you).
  6. Quarterly checkins to refocus on goals.
  7. Force yourself after travel or sick to not let momentum stop!

Don’t break the chain!
